Residents in South Carolina call police due to excessive noise from cicadas

Residents in one South Carolina county are puzzled by the loud noise of emerging cicadas, mistaking them for sirens or a roar. The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office clarified that the noise is just male cicadas singing to attract mates after being dormant for over a decade. Sheriff Lee Foster mentioned that some people have flagged deputies down to inquire about the sound. Trillions of red-eyed periodical cicadas are emerging in the eastern U.S., with their loud collective songs being as loud as jet engines. While the noise may be annoying to some, there is no danger posed to humans or pets.
