Russia opposes UN resolution to prevent space arms race

Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution proposed by the US and Japan to prevent an arms race in outer space, reaffirming the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. The resolution called for peaceful use of outer space and preventing weapon placement in orbit. The US raised concerns about Russia developing a space-based anti-satellite nuclear weapon. Despite 13 members supporting the resolution, Russia vetoed it, prompting questions about its intentions. Russia denied plans for weapons in space but the US claimed they were developing such a weapon. Both countries reaffirmed commitment to the Outer Space Treaty amid tensions at the UN Security Council.
