School board in Virginia decides to reinstate Confederate names at two schools

The school board in Virginia’s Shenandoah County voted 5-1 to restore the names of two schools honoring Confederate leaders, after public comments from both sides. Residents argued for preservation while a civil rights activist’s son criticized the move. The schools were renamed in 2020 to condemn racism, but the board now believes the change lacked public input and was rushed. Private donations would fund the restoration costs. While some parents oppose restoring Confederate names, others believe it is necessary to honor heritage and majority wishes. The current board is set to make a decision after considering community input.
