In comparison to the earlier abbreviated Season 20, Speedman had four appearances. His return aligns with Ellen Pompeo’s character, Meredith, who, as revealed last month, will also increase her on-screen presence with at least seven episodes. Representatives for ABC, Shondaland, and ABC Signature have not commented on this development.
Addressing the question of whether his character will see more screen time alongside Meredith in Season 21 at Comic-Con, Speedman was cautiously optimistic.
“Maybe, yeah, we’ll see. I never know what’s going on over there,” Speedman noted. “But I hope so, it’s a fun show.”
Speedman’s involvement in “Grey’s Anatomy” has been rather unique. Initially, he signed a one-year series regular contract for Season 18, which was anticipated to be for a single season arc. By the Season 18 finale, a significant rift appeared between Nick and Meredith, culminating in Nick’s departure. Despite Meredith chasing after him, he was already gone.
However, both fans and writers adored the pairing of Meredith and Nick. Consequently, Speedman has continued to play a recurring role, appearing in 14 episodes in Season 19 and four in Season 20. His appearances have included pivotal moments in the season premieres and finales, often featuring heartfelt love declarations and reconciliations with Meredith.
“We’re just so excited for Meredith and Nick to be together,” shared new “Grey’s Anatomy” showrunner Meg Marinis after the Season 20 premiere. “We’ll follow that relationship.”
In the Season 20 finale, Nick traveled from Boston to once again express his unwavering love for Meredith, despite her reluctance to integrate him into her life. Meredith responded with a significant gesture, revealing that she had placed an offer on a house in Chestnut Hill, a place they had previously discussed making their home together.
Scott Speedman will also be seen in Peacock’s James Wan-produced horror series “Teacup,” showcasing his diverse acting range.
