Sea lions flock to San Francisco’s Pier 39 for a feast of fish: NPR

An unusually large herd of sea lions has gathered at Pier 39 in San Francisco, attracting over 1,000 of the animals, the most seen in 15 years. The abundance of anchovies and herring in the bay waters has drawn the sea lions ahead of mating season. This surge is seen as a positive sign of the animals’ strong population and the health of their habitat. The presence of California sea lions is considered a reflection of the ocean’s health. Despite potential shifts in fish populations due to climate change, the sea lions continue to be a popular tourist attraction at Pier 39 since their unexpected arrival in 1989.
