Shannen Doherty: Mom Rosa Taught Her to Be a Fighter Before Passing at 53

Shannen Doherty spoke lovingly about her mother Rosa just a few months before the “Beverly Hills, 90210” star passed away at age 53 on Saturday.

In November 2023, the “Charmed” alum highlighted how her mom, who suffered a brain aneurysm when Doherty was only 8 years old, instilled tenacity in her from a young age.

“I come from a woman who was determined,” Doherty told People at the time. “She impressed that upon me as a very young child, like, ‘You don’t give up. You just have to work hard at it.'”

The actress continued, “I think I was always a fighter. I was raised that way to be very strong and that I could do anything that I put my mind to.”

After her breast cancer diagnosis, Doherty leaned on her family for support. She shared how her mom’s advice and presence influenced every decision she made. “I don’t think that there’s a decision that I make that I don’t take [my mom] into consideration,” she said. “I love her, and I am so incredibly grateful to her for being an amazing mother.”

Doherty’s affection for her mother was evident on social media through numerous posts. She celebrated Rosa’s 76th birthday with a heartfelt message in December, “Happy birthday to the best mom in the world. I love you to the moon and back times infinity. @themamarosa,” she wrote.

In April, Doherty shared on her “Let’s Be Clear” podcast that her mom was her “priority” as she navigated her cancer battle. “Because it’s going to be so hard on her, I want other things to be a lot easier,” Doherty said. “I don’t want her to have a bunch of stuff to deal with.”

Doherty passed away on July 13 at age 53, after a long and tough fight with cancer. Her longtime publicist, Leslie Sloane, confirmed her death in a statement, “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease.”

Sloane added, “The devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”

Doherty was remembered fondly by fans, friends, and several of her “Beverly Hills, 90210” co-stars, reflecting the significant impact she had on and off the screen.
