In a remarkable and heartwarming event at Dodger Stadium, Shohei Ohtani found himself outshined not by another player, but by his beloved dog, Decoy. This special moment occurred during the Dodgers star’s bobblehead night on August 28, where the atmosphere was filled with anticipation and excitement.

Fans began to line up outside the stadium a staggering 10 hours before the first pitch, eager to collect the sought-after bobblehead featuring Ohtani holding Decoy in his arms. As the gates opened, nearly 54,000 fans flooded into the stadium, each ecstatic to receive their limited edition memento.

Decoy, a Dutch Kooikerhondje, took center stage when he made his way to the pitching mound, donning a custom #17 Dodgers jersey that matched Ohtani’s. The moment was nothing short of adorable as Decoy picked up a baseball with his mouth and darted toward Ohtani, who was crouched behind home plate ready to receive the pitch.

As Decoy successfully delivered the baseball, the crowd erupted in applause, especially when he followed the throw with a high-five to Ohtani—a gesture that delighted the entire audience.

Following the game, Ohtani spoke about the preparation that went into the heartfelt act, mentioning that he and Decoy had been practicing for nearly three weeks. They even did a “dry run” at Dodger Stadium prior to the big night. Ohtani shared, “It’s a really special night. I hope to buy some special snack for him,” highlighting the bond between him and his furry companion.

On this special night, bobbleheads were handed out to the first 40,000 fans in attendance, with around 2,000 of them painted in gold. This rare item has captured the attention of collectors, with one of the golden bobbleheads now listed on eBay for an astonishing $17,000.

The demand for the event was so overwhelming that parking gates were reportedly opened two hours earlier than usual, allowing fans to pour in before the game. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts noted the intensity of the occasion, sharing that he almost missed the opportunity to see Decoy’s big moment due to being stuck in traffic. “I’m just happy that I made it,” he commented. “I don’t know if it was Shohei or Decoy or a combo, but there’s a high demand for this dang bobblehead.”

Decoy has gained a significant following since being featured in a video of Ohtani accepting the American League MVP award last year. The dog has quickly become a beloved figure among fans and has enhanced the off-field charisma of the baseball star.

When Ohtani was introduced as a member of the Dodgers following his trade from the Los Angeles Angels last December, he clarified his dog’s name, stating, “He’s named Dekopin. For people here, I think the pronunciation is difficult. His original name was Decoy. So when I explain it to people here, I introduce him as Decoy because it’s easier.”

Throughout the evening, it was evident that the bond between Ohtani and Decoy adds a delightful dynamic to the world of baseball, further endearing the superstar to his fans. The unforgettable first pitch moment and the thrilling atmosphere of the bobblehead night contributed to a special experience that fans won’t soon forget.
