Singer’s National Anthem at MLB Home Run Derby Criticized on Social Media

The MLB Home Run Derby on Monday night encountered a hiccup with singer Ingrid Andress’ rendition of the national anthem at Globe Life Field. The 32-year-old singer-songwriter, who has made appearances on the Billboard Hot 100, stood between the pitcher’s mound and home plate to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” However, her performance was met with considerable criticism.

Andress seemed to struggle with controlling her pitch, especially on the higher notes of the anthem, which did not go unnoticed. Among those who reacted was Philadelphia Phillies’ Alec Bohm, a Home Run Derby participant, who was seen smirking during the anthem. This moment drew comparisons to Fergie’s much-maligned national anthem performance at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game, which also elicited notable reactions from several NBA stars.

The reaction on social media was swift and largely negative. Users were not shy about sharing their disdain for Andress’ rendition. One user posted, “My ears are bleeding. One of the worst national anthem renditions ever.” Another added, “Ingrid Andress giving Fergie a run for the worst national anthem ever performed.” Some reactions were more sarcastic, with one user saying, “Uhhh… that anthem was interesting.” Even Sports Illustrated writer Alex Carr commented, “I’m so sorry, I’m sure Ingrid Andress is a wonderful person, but that was one of the worst national anthems I think I’ve ever heard in my whole life.”

Ingrid Andress is a country music artist, best known for her breakthrough single “More Hearts Than Mine” in 2019, which peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100. Beyond her solo work, she has also cowritten songs for other artists. Despite her accomplishments, her performance at the Home Run Derby will likely be remembered for the wrong reasons.
