State’s Attorney of Champaign County consulted before police intervention at protest, ready to pursue prosecution if necessary

Law enforcement agencies are responding to a large pro-Palestine encampment on the University of Illinois campus, with the Champaign County State’s Attorney supporting potential arrests. Despite no arrests being made as of 6:30 p.m., there have been confrontations between protestors and law enforcement at the Alma Mater Statue. State’s Attorney Julia Rietz is prepared to prosecute if necessary. One person was arrested Friday morning, and protestors began to rally again in the afternoon. University Police attempted to remove tents without making arrests but faced combative protestors. Urbana Fire Department is present for potential injuries, and the Illini 5K event was cancelled due to the police presence.
