Steelers’ Russell Wilson swiftly removed following scoring drive

Despite the loss, the Steelers are yet to finalize their starting quarterback for the upcoming season. Wilson’s limited play this week, combined with his strong performance, positions him favorably. As of now, the Steelers and the New England Patriots are the only teams that haven’t named their Week 1 starters.

“We’ll make a decision at the end of our work week,” Tomlin stated, indicating that evaluations would be made following internal scrimmages. This approach ensures that all factors are considered before finalizing player roles.

In his brief appearance, Wilson demonstrated his effectiveness by completing both of his pass attempts for 26 yards, including a crucial 32-yard reception to George Pickens on a third-and-long play. This effort set the stage for a 31-yard touchdown run by Cordarrelle Patterson, following solid blocks from rookie Zach Frazier and Isaac Seumalo.

Justin Fields took over after Wilson but benefitted from the first-team offensive line’s continued presence on the field for a series. Tomlin opted to keep the starters available to ensure adequate protection for Fields while he adjusted to game conditions.

This decision appeared prudent, as it provided Fields with crucial support. Upon entering, Fields orchestrated a six-play, three-minute drive that resulted in a touchdown by La’Mical Perine. The drive was marked by Fields’ connections with receivers, including a 22-yard pass to MyCole Pruitt that essentialized their scoring position.

Despite some mistakes, Tomlin was optimistic about the efforts of both quarterbacks. “They both moved the ball,” he said, expressing satisfaction with their progress. “They won possession downs. They were able to put the ball in the end zone,” something that had been lacking in previous games this preseason.
