Surgeons successfully perform groundbreaking dual organ transplant to save woman’s life

Doctors at NYU Langone Health successfully transplanted a pig kidney into a New Jersey woman, Lisa Pisano, who was near death due to heart and kidney failure. The surgery involved implanting a mechanical pump to support her heart, followed by the pig kidney transplant. Pisano is the second patient to receive a pig kidney, showing promising results. Unlike previous xenotransplant experiments, Pisano’s case was complex as both her heart and kidneys had failed. The surgeries were a success, raising hopes for future animal-to-human transplants.
