Suspect in Charlotte officers’ killing had prior criminal record in North Carolina

Investigators identified the suspect in the shooting of officers as 39-year-old Terry Hughes, wanted for possession of a weapon as a convicted felon. Hughes has an extensive criminal history across counties, including incidents of high-speed chases in 2012 and multiple drug and firearm charges in recent years. Despite previous arrests, Hughes has failed to appear in court multiple times. When officers attempted to serve a warrant for Hughes in Lincoln County, the fatal shootout occurred where four officers from Charlotte and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were shot, resulting in tragic deaths.
