Episode 1 of the new horror-thriller Tarot debuted on U+ mobile TV on Monday, July 15, 2024. The episode titled “Santa’s Visit” stars Parasite actress Cho Yeo-Jeong as Ji-Woo, a hard-working mother raising her young daughter alone.

The series features seven different suspenseful stories where each protagonist confronts a tarot card leading them to their painful fate. Episode 1 introduces Ji-Woo who finds a card labeled “Wheel of Fortune: Opportunity and Luck” in a shopping mall. Initially, she is pleased by the potential fortune the card promises, yet she is unaware that her life is on the brink of a devastating turn because of its curse.

The episode starts with Ji-Woo enjoying time with her young daughter. Their loving bond is evident and the Christmas decorations around their house suggest that the festive season is near.

Ji-Woo, as a dedicated single mother, works tirelessly to provide for her daughter. During a shopping trip before Christmas, her daughter desires a new doll, but Ji-Woo, aiming to save money, decides against it. During this trip, she unexpectedly discovers the “Wheel of Fortune” tarot card while putting the doll back on the shelf. At the moment, she is clueless about the card’s ominous implications.

Following her encounter with the tarot card, Ji-Woo experiences a series of bizarre events. She gets an unexpected chance to earn extra money by working at the mall on Christmas Eve, though this means leaving her daughter alone at home on Christmas Day, which greatly upsets her little girl.

While working, Ji-Woo checks on her daughter through a video call and sees her dressed in a special Christmas Eve outfit. Anxiety grips her when she notices someone else holding the phone during the call, prompting her to rush home. Despite calling her daughter and shouting in desperation, she returns to an empty house.

The climax of the episode is chilling. Ji-Woo discovers a frightening portrait depicting a monstrous figure in Santa’s clothing, holding a little girl’s hand, presumably her daughter’s. The creature in the illustration appears to be leading the girl away.

As she frantically searches her home, Ji-Woo finds her daughter’s outfit from the video call discarded on the floor. She also discovers the Peter Pan storybook she used to read to her daughter, noting that the story’s ending is sorrowful.

A gut-wrenching realization dawns on Ji-Woo: no one was responding to her during her previous frantic phone calls. She comprehends that her daughter is truly missing, likely due to something dreadful. The episode concludes with Ji-Woo desperately calling out for her daughter, hoping against hope to find her.
