Tennessee approves legislation allowing teachers to carry guns in public schools

Tennessee House Republicans passed a bill allowing some teachers to carry concealed handguns on public school grounds, sparking protests from the public. The bill would keep parents and other teachers from knowing who is armed. If signed into law, it would be the most significant expansion of gun access in the state since a deadly school shooting in Nashville last year. The bill’s sponsor argued it creates a deterrent against shootings. Lawmakers rejected Democratic amendments to the bill. Tennessee Republicans have a history of loosening gun laws, including a recent permit-less carry law. The bill now awaits Governor Bill Lee’s decision.
