The bill requires staff to undergo 40 hours of approved training yearly and obtain written authorization from law enforcement. While Governor Lee believes the bill offers districts the option to enhance school safety, Democrats like State Rep. Bo Mitchell criticized the measure, questioning the effectiveness of responding to violence with more guns. Tennessee joins 26 other states permitting teachers to carry firearms on school premises.
