Tennessee legislation approves bill permitting teachers to carry concealed weapons

Protesters in Tennessee shouted “Blood on your hands” at House Republicans after they passed a bill allowing some teachers to carry concealed handguns in public schools. The measure, if signed into law by Governor Bill Lee, would be the biggest expansion of gun access in the state since a deadly shooting in Nashville. The bill prohibits disclosing which teachers are armed to parents and other staff, requiring approval from the principal, school district, and law enforcement. Democrats criticized the bill, but Republicans rejected amendments, arguing it creates a deterrent. The bill also requires background checks and training for armed teachers. Tennessee has previously attempted to allow armed school workers, but implementation was unsuccessful.
