A relentless staging, sacrificial performances and, quite rightly, a shower of awards
Meanwhile, “The Revenant” and its protagonist, Leonardo DiCaprio, received praise from the specialized press for their performance in the winter nightmare across the vastness of the United States. The award-winning historical adventure for DiCaprio fans, has a very special meaning.
Thanks to Hugh Glass’s performance, he finally received his long-awaited Oscar in 2016, which many would have awarded him for “The Aviator” or “The Wolf of Wall Street”. On his fifth attempt, the time had finally come for him to take the Oscar home.
Director Alejandro González Iñárritu takes us to the United States of the 1820s, the Wild West, still practically intact, where men are ruthless and nature is even more ruthless. Along with Captain Andrew Henry and his companions, Hugh Glass explores the Missouri River. The expedition through the inhospitable winter landscape demands a lot from the men when one day, Glass is attacked by a grizzly bear.
Glass survives the attack, but his companions have no doubt that he will succumb to his wounds. They leave him behind, not knowing that Glass’s will to survive will take him far.
While DiCaprio, Hardy, Gleeson, and Poulter all deliver stellar performances in the film, “The Revenant” succeeds thanks to its visually powerful production. Iñárritu shot the film in pristine nature, with natural light and in freezing cold, allowing the audience to feel the bitter fight for survival of Glass and company.
The film received Oscar nominations for visual effects, editing, sound, makeup, costumes, and production design, highlighting its audiovisual qualities. Director Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki played a crucial role in creating a unique avalanche of images of splendor and power.
