Tourist from the U.S. faces 12-year prison sentence for bringing ammunition to Turks and Caicos

An Oklahoma man, Ryan Watson, is facing up to 12 years in prison on the Turks and Caicos Islands after ammunition was found in his luggage during a trip to celebrate his 40th birthday with his wife and friends. Watson claimed it was hunting ammunition he accidentally brought with him, but the strict law in the territory mandates a 12-year sentence for such offenses. His wife’s charges were dropped, and she returned home to their children in Oklahoma City. The U.S. Embassy warned travelers about the laws in Turks and Caicos after another American faced a similar situation in February. Watson’s trial is set for May 3.
