Trump Seeks Federal Court Intervention to Overturn Hush Money Conviction

Donald Trump has taken steps to challenge his recent conviction in a hush money case, filing a motion with a federal court to intervene. In this request, he is seeking to overturn his conviction and to postpone his impending sentencing, which is set for next month.

The former president’s legal team submitted the motion to the U.S. District Court in Manhattan. They contend that the prosecution at the state level not only infringed upon Trump’s constitutional rights but also contradicted a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision regarding presidential immunity.

In May, Trump was convicted in a Manhattan court of 34 counts of falsifying business records. This conviction stemmed from payments made to dismiss allegations of an affair that threatened to disrupt his 2016 presidential campaign.

Previously, a federal judge denied Trump’s attempt to relocate the case to federal jurisdiction last year, thereby allowing for the historic trial to proceed in state court.

In the new filing, Trump’s lawyers emphasized that bringing the case to federal court after his May 30 conviction will ensure a fair forum, free from local bias. They argue that if the case is moved, they will seek to have both the verdict overturned and the charges dismissed.

According to Trump’s attorneys, Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, the ongoing legal difficulties could lead to “direct and irreparable harm” to Trump, who is currently the leading candidate in the upcoming 2024 Presidential election. They stress that this situation affects voters far beyond the confines of Manhattan.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office, which handled the prosecution of the case, has been contacted for comment regarding Trump’s motion.
