Twisters Surpasses Twister in Domestic Box Office Earnings

Twisters hit theaters last month, following up the beloved 1996 disaster film, Twister. The new installment enjoyed a successful launch at the box office. Initially projected to have a domestic opening between $40 million to $55 million, it went on to make $80.5 million. Just over a month into its run, the film has officially exceeded Twister‘s domestic box office total. Twisters has earned $241.7 million in North America, surpassing the $241.6 million that Twister accumulated during its 1996 run.

The numbers are indeed close, but Twisters may extend its lead further. The movie is scheduled to return to 4DX theaters on August 30th, providing another boost to its earnings. “During the opening week of Twisters, most 4DX showtimes sold out quickly at Regal locations,” stated James Lamar, Head of Film at Regal. “Despite a packed summer movie calendar, we found an opportunity to schedule seven more days of Twisters in 4DX and introduce a new way to enjoy the original film.”

From August 30th through September 5th, Twisters will be available in 4DX theaters. Additionally, the film is now available on VOD, giving audiences more options to experience it.

The story of Twisters centers on Kate Cooper (played by Daisy Edgar-Jones), a former storm chaser who now studies storm patterns from the safety of New York City. She is haunted by a tornado encounter during her college years. Kate gets drawn back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos), to test a groundbreaking new tracking system.

In her return to storm chasing, she encounters Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), a social-media star known for posting his storm-chasing adventures with his daring crew. As the storm season escalates, they face terrifying new weather phenomena. Kate, Tyler, and their competing teams find themselves in a life-threatening situation as multiple storm systems converge over central Oklahoma.

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, known for Minari, the film also stars Brandon Perea (Nope), Sasha Lane (American Honey), Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders), and Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina). Additional cast members include Nik Dodani (Atypical), David Corenswet (Superman), Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), and Golden Globe winner Maura Tierney (Beautiful Boy).

For fans and newcomers alike, Twisters offers another thrilling chapter in storm-chasing cinema. The movie is currently playing in theaters and will be returning to 4DX venues on August 30th.
