The 1992 premiere was a poignant event, reflecting a challenging period in LA’s history and celebrating Ray Liotta’s life while delighting fans with a reunion of stars from the Fast & Furious franchise. Emotions were palpable as the cast and crew came together to mark the drama’s release. Featuring Tyrese Gibson, Scott Eastwood, and Liotta, 1992 finally materialized after years in development, thanks to director Ariel Vromen and Lionsgate’s efforts.
In 1992, Mercer (Gibson) aims to reconnect with his son and shield him from an enraged mob during the infamous LA uprising that started on April 29, 1992. Amid the turmoil, Mercer and his son encounter another father (Liotta) and son (Eastwood), delving into their strained relationship. Though the narrative is fictional, it closely mirrors the actual events of the time.
“If you want to watch a documentary about the 1992 riots, that’s not this movie,” Gibson told UPI. “This is about a heist. This is about father-son dynamics.” The LA uprising ignited after a jury acquitted four officers accused of assault following the brutal beating of King. The film’s depiction of the riots is particularly personal for Gibson, who lived through them. “I was scared, but I was fed up like everyone else,” Gibson recalled. “I just remember at least five weeks of never seeing the sun because the sky was pitch black with smoke.”
At the 1992 premiere, Gibson experienced a touching Fast & Furious reunion. His co-star Vin Diesel shared an emotional moment with him on the red carpet, soon joined by Michelle Rodriguez for a group photo. Over two decades after their initial collaboration in the first Fast & Furious film, the camaraderie among these friends remains strong.
“We’re at this really interesting time right now in Hollywood,” Diesel told Africa News. “And the first people I’m going to support is a family that’s been recognized by the world, the ‘Fast’ family. I got to just support that and encourage [Gibson] to continue his artistry because I think he’s so good.”
Just as the Fast & Furious cast commemorated Paul Walker’s death at the Furious 7 premiere in 2015, Gibson ensured that Ray Liotta’s legacy was honored during the 1992 premiere. Liotta passed away on May 26, 2022, due to heart failure, pulmonary edema, and respiratory failure. He had completed filming several projects shortly before his death, including 1992.
Liotta’s daughter, Karsen Liotta, walked the red carpet to honor her father’s legacy. Gibson shared a brief, tender moment with the 25-year-old, taking her hand and bowing his head. Karsen, daughter of actor/producer Michelle Grace, Liotta’s ex-wife, is also an actor, having appeared in films like Shades of Blue (2016) and Black Bird (2022).
On August 30, 2024, 1992 will have a limited theatrical release in the U.S.
