U.S. Judges Decline Map Creating New Majority-Black House District in Louisiana

A new congressional district map that would have given Louisiana a second majority-Black House district was rejected by a panel of federal judges, causing uncertainty about district boundaries for fall elections. The ruling was due to a lawsuit claiming unconstitutional racial gerrymandering. Supporters argued that politics, not race, played a major role in the new map, which maintains safe districts for five incumbents. The ruling is the latest development in a legal battle over redistricting, initiated after a vetoed map favorable to all six current incumbents was overridden by the majority-Republican Legislature. The case will likely be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
