United Methodists initiating reversal of long-standing anti-LGBTQ policies

United Methodist delegates made historic changes regarding LGBTQ policies, voting to reverse penalties for same-sex marriages and lifting bans on LGBTQ candidates for ministry and funding gay-friendly ministries. The actions signify a shift in the church’s stance on LGBTQ issues. The conference is the first legislative gathering since 2019, with more progressive delegates following conservative congregations’ departure due to the enforcement of LGBTQ bans. Still pending are final votes on removing bans on LGBTQ clergy and same-sex marriage, with overwhelming support in committee votes. The changes could lead to regional autonomy for the United States regarding LGBTQ clergy and same-sex marriage.
