United Methodists lift ban on LGBTQ clergy

Delegates of the United Methodist Church voted to repeal the ban on LGBTQ clergy, with a vote of 692-51 at the General Conference. The change does not mandate LGBTQ clergy but no longer forbids them from serving churches. Further votes will be taken to potentially remove the denomination’s stance on the “practice of homosexuality.” Rev. David Meredith celebrated the change, as part of the Reconciling Ministries Network. While many members are celebrating the decision, thousands of conservative congregations have disaffiliated from the church due to the lack of enforcement of bans on LGBTQ inclusion.
