US Accuses Israel of Potentially Violating International Law with American Weapons in Gaza

The US has expressed concerns over potential breaches of international humanitarian law by Israel during the war in Gaza, possibly involving American-supplied weapons. A report submitted to Congress acknowledged difficulties in assessing whether Israel’s use of US arms had met legal obligations. While the report criticized some Israeli operations, it did not definitively conclude that Israel had violated international law. Israel faced a significant military challenge fighting Hamas in Gaza, and efforts to mitigate civilian harm were described as inconsistent. The report also noted improvements in Israeli cooperation with US humanitarian aid efforts in Gaza. Israeli troops had closed the Rafah crossing with Egypt during their military campaign in response to a Hamas attack, leading to mass displacement of civilians.
