US company acquires former passenger jets to develop advanced nuclear ‘Doomsday’ planes

Five Boeing 747 passenger jets previously operated by Korean Air have been purchased by the Sierra Nevada Corporation to be converted into “Doomsday” planes, which serve as command-and-control centers for the US military during a national emergency. These planes can house the US president, secretary of defense, and other key officials to control forces worldwide. The Sierra Nevada Corporation was awarded a $13 billion contract by the US Air Force to develop the new Doomsday plane, with completion expected by 2036. Korean Air sold the jets as part of their plan to introduce new aircraft, with the deal expected to be finalized by September 30, 2025.
