US covertly sent ATACMS missiles to Ukraine despite opposition

The US Army tested an early version of the Army Tactical Missile System at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The Biden administration secretly approved the transfer of long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine, included in a $300 million aid package, and delivered earlier this month. This was done to address readiness concerns as Lockheed Martin produces approximately 500 missiles per year. The decision was made after Russia’s use of North Korean ballistic missiles against Ukraine. More missiles are expected to be included in new military assistance packages, following delays in Congress. Ukraine had previously requested the long-range missiles to target deeper behind Russian lines.
