US intelligence official believes Putin is unlikely to have ordered Navalny’s death, report suggests

A senior U.S. intelligence official told The Wall Street Journal that Russian President Vladimir Putin likely did not order the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in a Russian prison in February. While Putin is still considered responsible for Navalny’s death, investigations have not found direct evidence of his involvement. President Biden denounced Putin after Navalny’s death, holding him responsible but not accusing him of ordering a killing. Russian officials claim Navalny died of natural causes and deny any involvement. Putin won a fifth term in national elections shortly after Navalny’s death.
