US Troops to be Withdrawn from Niger Following Revocation of Military Deal

The United States is in talks with Niger to withdraw American troops after more than a decade of military presence in the West African nation. The decision comes after Niger’s ruling military junta revoked a 2012 military cooperation deal with the U.S. and showed interest in partnering with Russia. Following the withdrawal of French troops, Niger and other countries in the region are increasingly turning to Russia for security assistance. Russia has deployed officers to Niger to train military personnel, raising concerns about the country’s growing influence in the Sahel region. Amid these changes, the U.S. is continuing to work with regional nations to address terror threats.
