Chad Daybell, a central figure in a notorious Idaho murder case intertwined with extreme religious beliefs, is facing trial as jury selection kicks off this week. This marks the second major trial in this complex case, following the conviction of his wife, Lori Vallow Daybell, last year. The trials were initially planned to be conducted jointly, but were separated after Daybell waived his right to a speedy trial. Lori Vallow Daybell was found guilty in May 2023 of multiple charges, including the murder of her two children, and was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. She has since been extradited to Arizona to face additional charges related to other alleged conspiracies to commit murder.
Chad Daybell faces a series of grave charges, including the murder of his previous wife, Tammy Daybell, and the murder of Lori Vallow’s children, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan. Additionally, he is charged with conspiracy to commit murder in the deaths of JJ and Tylee, which encompasses conspiracy to commit grand theft by deception. Further charges against him include conspiracy to commit murder and two counts of insurance fraud in connection with Tammy Daybell’s death. Daybell has entered a plea of not guilty to all charges.
The trial of Chad Daybell is set to unfold separately from his wife’s, beginning in April 2024. The decision to sever their trials was made after Daybell waived his right to a speedy trial, allowing more time for his legal team to prepare. His trial is expected to be a lengthy one, with estimates suggesting it could last up to 10 weeks. The proceedings are being overseen by Judge Steven Boyce, who also presided over Lori Vallow Daybell’s trial.
The case has captured widespread attention due to its bizarre elements and the extreme religious beliefs professed by the Daybells. Both were involved in publishing and promoting fringe religious content, which included doomsday-focused ideologies. Authorities allege that these beliefs played a role in the justification of the murders. The couple was accused of deeming individuals as “zombies” or possessed by evil spirits as part of their doctrinal narratives, which purportedly led to the fatal outcomes.
Chad Daybell’s adult children have publicly defended their father, asserting his innocence. They argue that the manner in which the bodies were buried does not align with someone who has professional experience as a gravedigger, suggesting instead that Lori Vallow Daybell and her brother, Alex Cox, who passed away in late 2019, were responsible. The community and the victims’ families continue to seek justice and closure as the trial progresses.
Significant legal debates have surrounded the case, particularly regarding the application of the death penalty. While the death penalty was ruled out for Lori Vallow Daybell, it remains a potential outcome for Chad Daybell. His defense team has argued against this, citing discrepancies in legal treatment and questioning the fairness of imposing the death penalty when his co-defendant, facing similar charges, was spared from it.
