Willie Junior Maxwell II, better known by his stage name Fetty Wap, was born on June 7, 1991, in Paterson, New Jersey. From a young age, Fetty faced significant challenges. He was born with glaucoma in both eyes, which led to the loss of his left eye. Despite this early setback, Fetty Wap’s passion for music would soon become his defining trait. He attended Eastside High School but eventually dropped out to chase his musical dreams, a decision that would pave the way for his future successes.
Fetty Wap’s music career took off in 2013 when he began to explore his interest in music more seriously. Initially focusing on rapping, he soon incorporated singing into his repertoire, wanting to create a unique sound. His stage name, “Fetty,” is derived from slang for money, while “Wap” pays homage to Gucci Mane’s alias, Guwop. His breakout hit, “Trap Queen,” released in 2014, catapulted him to stardom. The track peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and received critical acclaim for its catchy rhythm and unique blend of singing and rapping.
Following the success of “Trap Queen,” Fetty Wap released two more chart-toppers in 2015, “679” and “My Way,” which further established him as a prominent figure in the music industry. His debut album, released in September 2015, topped the Billboard 200 chart, solidifying his place in the music world. Fetty Wap’s style is often described as a melodic blend of singing and rapping, which he himself has dubbed “ignorant R&B.” His music often incorporates themes from his life experiences, making his lyrics relatable to a broad audience.
Despite his professional success, Fetty Wap has faced several legal issues over the years. In 2021, he was indicted on charges related to drug trafficking, which led to his incarceration in 2022. These legal troubles have cast a shadow over his career, although he continues to make music and influence the industry even from behind bars. On a personal note, Fetty Wap has six children with five different women, and he strives to remain a part of their lives despite the complexities of his career and personal challenges.
Even as he serves his sentence, Fetty Wap’s influence on the music industry remains undeniable. He has ventured into various collaborations and continues to release music that resonates with his fans. His latest album, “King Zoo,” was released in 2023 and includes collaborations with notable artists, showcasing his enduring relevance in the music scene. Fetty Wap’s journey is a testament to the complexities of fame—combining significant professional achievements with personal and legal challenges.
