What the United Methodist Church’s Recent Vote for LGBT Inclusion Means for the Organization’s Future

Bishop Karen Oliveto, the first openly gay bishop in the United Methodist Church, is set to retire after a challenging journey of uncertainty about her ordination. The General Conference recently overturned bans on LGBTQ individuals, allowing for new opportunities for LGBTQ members. The end of anti-LGBTQ church laws, though celebrated by many, also led to conservative congregations disaffiliating from the church. The church approved a constitutional amendment for regionalization, allowing for adjustments to fit different beliefs. Despite potential departures from the church, there is hope for a more inclusive and welcoming future within the United Methodist Church.
