Rebel Wilson has found herself in legal trouble as the producers behind her directorial debut film, The Deb, have sued her. The film, an Australian comedy musical, was pulled from the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and Rebel has taken to social media to express her frustration over the matter.

The lawsuit, which was filed on July 12, follows Rebel’s vocal criticisms of the film’s producers on social media. She accused the producers of exhibiting “bad behavior” after they allegedly withdrew the film from TIFF, where it had been invited to be the closing feature.

Rebel specifically named producers Amanda Ghost, Gregor Cameron, and executive producer Vince Holden, accusing them of trying to “bury” the film to which many people had devoted their efforts. She called the situation “beyond devastating” and accused them of “bad behavior” on set, including “inappropriate behavior towards the lead actress” and “embezzling funds from the film’s budget.”

According to Rebel, the producers’ actions severely impacted the film, which was already operating on a tight budget. She revealed that after she reported their conduct, she faced “absolute viciousness and retaliatory behavior.” She described her experience on set as being met with constant obstacles intended to make her life difficult.

The lawsuit, filed in the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, sees Amanda Ghost, Gregor Cameron, and Vince Holden denying her claims of embezzlement and inappropriate behavior towards the lead actress. They have also raised accusations against Rebel, accusing her of being unprofessional and making unauthorized disclosures about the film.

In their legal documents, the producers claimed that Rebel “flatly refused to collaborate with Plaintiffs, absconded from the Film for months at a time, behaved unprofessionally with employees of the Film, and repeatedly made unauthorized and improper disclosures about the Film.”

The legal filings also mention a significant dispute over credits. The producers claimed that the tensions escalated when Rebel demanded a co-writing credit and rights to the film’s original music. They accused her of trying to overshadow young, upcoming artists who deserved the credit for their work.

Explaining their decision to withdraw The Deb from TIFF, the producers stated they had to carefully consider whether to continue marketing the film while it was embroiled in “numerous credit and licensing disputes instigated by Rebel.” They claimed to have continuously attempted to resolve these disputes in good faith, but accused Rebel of having “other ideas.”

The producers alleged that Rebel used her significant social media platform to “force the issue and bully them” into meeting her demands, spreading “malicious and baseless lies about [the producers]” in the process.

In response, Rebel posted a photo on Instagram of herself on set with her cast and crew, captioning it: “It’s not defamation if it’s the TRUTH (those ‘producers’ who I mentioned in my last post have just filed a defamation suit against me and sent to the press)! Let our cool movie play at Toronto and stop messing about with a rubbish defamation suit against me!”
