Writers withdrawing in protest lead to cancellation of PEN America awards ceremony: NPR.

PEN America canceled its annual literary awards ceremony after nearly half of the writers and translators withdrew their nominated books due to the organization’s failure to address the Gaza genocide. The awards will proceed for those who did not withdraw, but the ceremony, scheduled for April 29, will not take place. Writers criticized PEN America for its delayed response to the Palestinian conflict, leading to the withdrawals. The foundation donated the unawarded prize money to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. Winners who did not withdraw will still receive their cash prizes, including Tony Kushner.
