Zoe Kravitz on Renaming “Pussy Island”: Some Women Were Offended

Zoë Kravitz recently shared with Entertainment Weekly the journey behind renaming her directorial debut, starring Channing Tatum and Naomi Ackie. Originally titled “Pussy Island,” the project is now known as “Blink Twice.”

“It became evident to me that ‘pussy’ is a word that society isn’t ready to embrace,” Kravitz said regarding the change. “There were numerous obstacles, such as the MPAA not wanting it on posters or billboards; movie theaters not wanting it on tickets.”

“Interestingly, after some research, women were offended by the word. Many said, ‘I don’t want to see that movie,’ which is part of why I wanted to reclaim the word. I aimed to make it less uncomfortable, but we’re not there yet. As a filmmaker, I feel responsible to listen. I care about how the film makes people feel,” Kravitz added.

While Kravitz holds the “seed of the film” in “Pussy Island,” she is satisfied with the new title “Blink Twice.” She believes, “everything happens for a reason, and it refocuses the movie wonderfully. It seems that’s how it was always meant to be.”

“Blink Twice” follows Frida (Ackie) and Jess (Alia Shawkat) as they are drawn to a private island by tech billionaire Slater King (Tatum) for a weekend getaway. What starts as a steamy vacation quickly turns into a reality-bending nightmare. The film also stars Kyle MacLachlan, Haley Joel Osment, Adria Arjona, Geena Davis, Simon Rex, Christian Slater, and Liz Caribel.

“Blink Twice” is slated for release on August 23.
