Katee Sackhoff Praises Zack Snyder’s Adaptation in Chapter 1

Watchmen: Chapter 1 arrives on Digital this weekend, bringing the world of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ iconic graphic novel to a new medium. This two-part animated movie is the second cinematic adaptation of the franchise, following Zack Snyder’s divisive live-action film from 2009. Discussing her involvement in Watchmen: Chapter 1, voice actress Katee Sackhoff, who plays Laurie Juspeczyk / Silk Spectre II, shared that her admiration for Snyder’s version ultimately influenced her decision to join this project.

“Zack Snyder’s was a phenomenal interpretation,” Sackhoff stated. “I loved it. It’s part of why I wanted to do this, because it inspired me and made my imagination start to go. For fans of the book, this feels important and true to the storytelling. I think they’ll love it and really enjoy this.”

In Watchmen: Chapter 1, set in an alternate history in 1985, the murder of a government-sponsored superhero pulls his former colleagues out of retirement and into a mystery that threatens not only their personal lives but the entire world. The cast includes Titus Welliver as Rorschach, Matthew Rhys as Nite Owl, Katee Sackhoff as Silk Spectre, Michael Cerveris as Doctor Manhattan, and Troy Baker as Ozymandias.

Reflecting on her role, Sackhoff delved into her approach to portraying these complex characters. “One of the things I try to do with these characters, these women — Poison Ivy in Batman: The Long Halloween, for instance, was misunderstood. There’s so much vulnerability, pain, and anger. Those are important things for me to bring to life.”

“Laurie has a lot of self-doubt, vulnerability, and pain,” Sackhoff continued. “I really wanted to make that her through line. I’ve been in situations where I loved someone with all my heart and didn’t feel I was enough. It’s a terrible feeling, and I held on to that for Laurie. I think you can hear it in her voice.”

Watchmen: Chapter 1 is available exclusively on Digital on August 13, with 4K UHD and Blu-ray releases arriving on August 27. Watchmen: Chapter 2 is set to debut later in 2024.
