Bitkom: 38 percent of the student body would like to use digital means

According to a survey by the industry association Bitkom, 38 percent of children and young people would like to be able to use digital (aids) in class.

According to a representative survey, 38 percent of all ten to eighteen-year-olds called for smartphones to be used in the classroom. The figure was 37 percent at grammar schools and 42 percent at other school types. According to Bitkom, they could be used to shoot explanatory videos, explore maps or do research.

The children and young people want concrete concepts for the use of digital means and also demand rules for everyday school life with smartphones. 59 percent of ten to eighteen year olds think that smartphones should only be used in certain places or according to clear guidelines. More than half (54 percent) of those surveyed support a ban during class tests. Only a quarter (26 percent) agree that mobile phones should be strictly forbidden in the classroom.

Bitkom President Achim Berg emphasizesthat schools “should be able to switch to home schooling at any time at the beginning of the third Corona year”, also “so that all pupils can participate in the lessons at any time and regardless of the Corona situation”. The result of the survey also shows how important “corresponding skills are in the school management and in the teaching staff”.

From Bitkom’s point of view, lessons should always be open to digital devices. This requires well thought-out didactic concepts, which can be found at pioneering schools, for example.

Bitkom has already advocated the right to digital teaching in the past, even regardless of the coronavirus pandemic. The decision of Federal Constitutional Court on a “right to education” in November 2021, which is not necessarily linked to face-to-face teaching, supports the association’s demand.

In further surveys, the association also determined that parents and students are very open to the digitization of schools, and that there are only a few digitization refusers. The degree of digitization in German schools and the preparation for further lockdowns were rated as extremely poor by parents in autumn 2020.

For the survey commissioned by the digital association, 920 children between the ages of six and eighteen were interviewed, including more than 641 between the ages of ten and eighteen.
