Gary Lee, 33, lost his wallet with his driver’s license in Rockaway Beach (New York, USA) on Thursday, becoming a TikTok meme after someone found it, reports Insider.
A user identified as @senasoup published a video on this social network in which she showed the card, with the man’s face and a message asking him to contact her to return the lost item.
It was then that the recording went viral, accumulating more than 25 million views and 4 million ‘likes’ in just three days.
Hundreds of people put Gary Lee’s name and image as a profile picture on their respective TikTok accounts. Some even posed as their family members or pets, flooding the comment section.
A friend of Lee’s saw the video and got in touch with its creator. So, the man made a TikTok account, @ therealgarylee5, to write to the woman. Shortly after he met her in Manhattan and got his wallet back after proving that he was its owner.
“My friend warned me and I couldn’t believe it,” Lee explained to the American media. “It spread so fast. All the other comments were [de] fake accounts […] I found it funny that all those people pretended to be me, “he added, while being grateful for having recovered his wallet with all its contents.
