In a heroic act that has gained widespread recognition, a 13-year-old boy from northern Michigan saved his younger sister from an attempted kidnapping using a slingshot. The incident occurred on May 10 in Alpena Township when Owen Burns’ sister was out looking for mushrooms.
Owen, who was playing video games, heard a scream but assumed that his sister was simply having fun with her friends. However, when he heard another scream, he looked out of the window and saw someone attempting to take his sister away.
Deciding to act quickly, Owen searched for a weapon to protect his sister. He grabbed his slingshot and two items – a marble and a rock – and rushed to his sister’s aid. Without hesitating, he attacked the 17-year-old assailant in the head and chest, ultimately allowing his sister to escape.
The police soon arrived and arrested the suspect, who now faces charges of attempted kidnapping and other crimes. John Grimshaw, a state police first lieutenant, called Owen’s actions “extraordinary,” stating that the boy saved his sister’s life and prevented “something extremely serious” from happening to her.
The heroism demonstrated by Owen has been widely praised, with many commending his quick thinking and bravery in the face of danger. Although Owen admits to being scared during the incident, he was determined to protect his sister and acted accordingly.
This story serves as a reminder of the importance of quick thinking in an emergency and the critical role that ordinary individuals can play in preventing crimes from occurring. Owen’s actions are a testament to the power of courage and the impact that even one individual can have on the world around them.
