TIOBE index: Python is the programming language of the year 2021

Each year, the operators of the monthly TIOBE Programming Community Index choose the programming language of the year with the highest increase in ratings. For the second time in a row, the title goes to Python. However, there was almost a first-time winner, because in the last month of 2021 Python overtook the increasingly popular C # programming language.

For Python, on the other hand, the winners’ podium is not new: In 2007, 2010, 2018 and 2020, the programming language used in machine learning and data science, among other things, won the title of programming language of the year. According to the makers of the TIOBE index, the popularity of Python is due to the fact that it has the potential to become the de facto standard programming language in many areas.

The overview of the TIOBE index from 2002 to 2022 shows the development of the top 10 programming languages. However, these are the respective ratings and not the growth that is used to determine the winner of the year.

As far as the annual ranking is concerned, TIOBE currently sees no signs of newcomers in the top 5, with two exceptions: Apple’s Swift programming language, which climbed from 13th to 10th place, and the Go programming language developed by Google, which moved up from 14th place by one Position rose. The programming language Julia, which is primarily aimed at scientific use, which climbed from 47th to 23rd in 2020, could not continue this development in 2021 and is now at 28th place.

In the first TIOBE index of the year published at the same time, Python also appears at the top – with an increase of 1.86% compared to the same month of the previous year. It is followed by C and Java with losses of 4.94% and 1.30% respectively.

As with other programming language rankings, the method of the TIOBE index not undisputed. The monthly evaluation is based on search queries to the 25 search engines ranked highest by Alexa that meet certain criteria. At this point, however, a problem will arise this year: Alexa.com is to be switched off on May 1, 2022. The Alexa.com Top Sites API is slated to be disabled on December 15, 2022.

The current TIOBE index and a list of the programming languages of the year since 2003 can be found at TIOBE.
