Diablo 2 Resurrected It is among the most anticipated games of this final stretch of 2021, because not surprisingly, the original from 2000 is one of the titles that gave Blizzard the popularity it has today, although certain events are slowly ending it. Not only Blizzard, but also Activision itself has had problems in recent times due to complaints of harassment within the company, something that in Vicarious Visions, the study in charge of this remake, worries to the extent that it may affect the reception of the game.
This has been expressed in an interview with the medium Axios, in which they acknowledge that the public should simply “do what they think is right”, referring to whether or not to buy Diablo II Resurrected when it hits stores this next week. According to said article, in the study it is specifically concerned that this is the first game launched by Activision after the discrimination complaint filed in California, in addition to sexism, harassment and other toxic behaviors in Blizzard, original creators, as we said, of the Diablo franchise, which already has three installments, a fourth to come and a mobile spin-off, Diablo Immortal.
They were not oblivious to the problems
“It was definitely problematic hearing this kind of thing,” acknowledges Rob Gallerani, Design Director at Vicarious Visions. “We really wanted to support our colleagues and peers.” This led the study, says Gallerani, and despite the fact that they were initially oblivious to these accusations, to ask its members about their comfort in it, something that mostly had positive responses. “I don’t think we should overlook it, we always need to ask,” he says.
And it is that according to Gallerani confesses, he did not think they had any kind of problem in this sense, since Diablo 2 was not a controversial game at the time. Nevertheless, this new revision has not been spared some controversy, despite the fact that after thoroughly reviewing its content, they did not have to change things like names or missions, since it is something that Blizzard has had to do in certain titles such as Overwatch. Specifically, the initial appearance of the Amazon has had to change to a less sexualized one after complaints from some of Blizzard’s most popular fans, one of whom even spoke of this class looking more like a “Victoria’s Secret model.”
“Many of these views weighed heavily on us,” Gallerani acknowledges. “We want the characters to look more like warriors fighting demons, not people leaving a club than a club at night.”
Diablo 2 Resurrected arrives this next day 23 to PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series, PC and Nintendo Switch.
