Tsunami warning after a major earthquake in northeast Japan

An earthquake of magnitude 7.2 on Ritcher’s open scale shook northeastern Japan today, prompting the Japanese authorities to declare the tsunami warning in Miyagi Prefecture.

The earthquake occurred at 18:09 local time on Saturday (9.09 GMT), with epicenter in the sea off the coast of Miyagi and about 60 kilometers deep, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

This body also warned of the risk of a tsunami one meter high in the same northeastern prefecture of Japan.
