The war that Russian President Vladimir Putin is carrying out against Ukraine is also “a war against the unity of Europe,” German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned on Sunday (07.24.2022).
“The war that Putin is waging against Ukraine is also a war against the unity of Europe. We must not allow ourselves to be divided, we must not allow ourselves to be destroyed by the great work of a united Europe that we have started so promisingly,” Steinmeier said in a speech at Paderborn (west).
“This war does not concern only the territory of Ukraine. It touches the double common foundation of our values and our peaceful order,” he added.
But defending these values and being a guarantor of them also means being willing to “accept sensitive inconveniences”, stressed the German president, without giving more details.
“Are we ready for it? We are all confronted with this issue, today and in the days, weeks and months to come,” he said.
“Russia is not content with questioning the borders, it is not content with occupying the territories of a neighboring sovereign and independent state, (Russia) even goes so far as to question the nature of Ukraine as a state,” he charged.
